When you’re stuck, and nothing seems to be going your way, it can be easy to focus on all of the negatives around you. To give time and energy to the thoughts that tell you how you’re not understood, not valued, not good enough and not achieving anything worthwhile.
If left this can give way to depression, anxiety and fear, and even see you resent and back away from the people who love and support you the most.
Have you ever been there? You can almost become paralysed in this state, being kept prisoner by your negative mindset.
If you have, you’re not alone. In fact, this is one of the most frequent frustrations I hear from my coaching clients. Stressed out, overworked and overscheduled they are close to burnout, the passion has faded, they are feeling unfulfilled, unsatisfied and “stuck”. Their outlook, posture and attitude changes as they focus on all of the things not working for them, instead of focusing on what they can change.
Perhaps you’re not to the point of burnout but just stuck, trapped within the confines of your comfort zone and beating yourself up because you really should be further along with your goals. Even these negative thoughts towards yourself can be enough to attract more negativity into your life.
If this is all sounding a little too familiar to you, and you are drowning under negative thoughts, then I have a small task for you that will change everything.
Keep a gratitude journal.
Each day write down what you’re grateful for. Can’t even begin to imagine what that could be? Then start simple. Here are some to get you started:
“I’m grateful for waking up.”
“I’m grateful for the air in my lungs.”
“I’m grateful for the roof over my head.”
“I’m grateful for the food in the kitchen.”
“I’m grateful for my family.”
“I’m grateful for my health.”
“I’m grateful for the person who let me in on the freeway.”
“I’m grateful for the smile I got from a stranger.”
“I’m grateful for the sun shining through the clouds.”
As you start to shift your focus to all of the good things you’re grateful for and meditate on your good fortune, a miraculous thing will happen. You’ll struggle to stop. Suddenly you’ll be grateful and finding joy in the smallest of moments.
You’ll feel energy, excitement and passion return to your body. You’ll start to notice things you’ve never noticed before and value the things you once took for granted. That weight and exhaustion you felt will be lifted from you.
Everything will start to change.
Why? Because what you focus on you become. Your mind is an incredible tool that can be used to build you up or destroy your spirit. How you use it is up to you. Through small mind-shifts and action, you’ll become unstuck. The web will become less tangled, and the weights that once held you down will become lighter.
So if you are feeling stuck, under pressure, overwhelmed, unappreciated, or unloved start writing your grateful list today and get ready for your transformation.
